Engagement Story

Matthew and I had been talking about getting married and we had a tentative date. But no solid plans had been made so I could wait until I could officially announce our engagement. I knew Matthew had gone out on his own and picked out my ring and was just waiting for it to be sized in order to propose. I had told him the one stipulation I had for our engagement was too make sure I had dressed up for the occasion.

About twice a year I get together with my life-long friends from Boise for a weekend get away. In August, Matthew had started as the Maintenance Manager at a Marriott hotel so he was able to get us a discounted room in Park City for our getaway this time. We had been planning this slumber party Friday October 14th. But the night we were leaving for Park City, I started stressing about some details about the wedding and had lost all excitement for going anymore. When I told Matthew I was thinking about staying behind, he sured me that I would have fun if I just went and enjoyed the night. Finally between Matthew and my friends, I was convinced to stay with the plans. When we got to the hotel the girls insisted on us all getting dressed up and going for a nice dinner all together. I didn't really feel like getting all dolled up but the girls told me it was necessary to make the evening complete. The five of us went out for a fun night in Park City and headed back to our hotel room.

When we entered the room, there was a card and gerber daisy (my favorite) on the tv stand. My heart leaped and I thought that this could be the moment. But then I read the card which said "Dear Kelly, I can't wait to be with you again. I will love you forever. Love Tim" This really puzzled me because none of us were named Kelly or knew a Tim. So then I was just creeped out that a stranger had been in our room while we were gone. We decided we needed to call the front desk and make them aware of the situation. The front desk said they would send the manager down to get the strange present. A couple minutes later there was a knock at the door and without even questioning it, I took the flower and card to the door to give to the manager. But to my surprise I found Matthew on his knee with the ring. And my friends were gathered around with cameras and video cameras. They had been in on the plans the whole time with Matthew. Of course there were tears, laughter, and grins and the puzzled question "So is this flower and card really from you???". He had later told me he wanted to get my hopes up and then dash them for affect. He knew me quite well and knew that is exactly how I would respond. But I loved the way Matthew proposed and I loved having my best friends there for my special moment. I will treasure that weekend forever.
